Celebrate National Library Week 2010: April 11-17

Celebrate National Library Week this year by stopping by the Children’s Room! You can take out and read one of our many picture books, easy readers, board books, chapter books, or nonfiction books. You can also use our computers to listen to stories on Tumble Book or play games. Browse through our periodicals, check out our DVD collection, or borrow one of our Children’s Music CDs or Books on CD. Whatever your interest is, you’ll find it at the Library!

New Books on CD

Stop by the Children’s Room and check out the latest books on CD. If you’re interested in mysteries, check out The Mixed-Up Mask Mystery written by Elizabeth Levy and read by William Dufris and Christine Marshall. For adventure, take out the newest Geronimo Stilton audiobook, which is narrated by Bill Lobley. There’s Book 17: Watch Your Whiskers, Stilton and Book 18: Shipwreck on the Pirate Islands. If you’re looking for comedy, borrow Roscoe Riley Rules #4: Never Swim in Applesauce written by Katherine Applegate and read by Jared Goldsmith. Let’s Get Graphic!

In the Book Ends’ third and final program of the season, we’ll be exploring one of the most entertaining and popular genres - the graphic novel. The program will be held Saturday, April 17 at 3:00PM for children currently in Grades 3-5 and will include games and a craft. Get in touch with your creative side and check with a Children’s Librarian for availability!

Celebrate National TV Turnoff Week 2010: April 19-25!

For the week of April 19-25, the Children’s Room is proud to offer an array of programming that encourages children to turn off the television and do some new activities that are creative, exciting, and fun:

• Family Storytime (Wednesday, April 21 at 7:30PM) - The whole family is invited to join us for a variety of stories, songs, and rhymes! No registration is required, but space is limited. This program is for Garden City residents.

• Drop-in Crafts Day (Thursday, April 22 from 3:30PM-5:30PM) - Open to all ages! Stop by and help us to reduce, reuse, and recycle the supplies in our craft cabinets, while making something cute to take home! No registration is required but this program is only for Garden City residents.

• Hobby Fair (Saturday, April 24 from 1:00PM-4:00PM) - Open to all! What are some fun things you do that don’t involve the television? Share your collections with others or demonstrate your hobby. Reserve a space to show off your hobby beginning Saturday, April 10 at 9:00AM on Eventkeeper. If you’d like to just explore, watch, and learn, no registration is required. This program is for Garden City residents.

Please check the Library website www.gardencitypl.org for upcoming events and registration dates. Funding for these programs has been provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
