A Word From The Publisher

What’s Less Inconvenient?

According to U.S. Census figures available online, Garden City residents have returned their census forms at a greater rate than the national average, but it’s really nothing to brag about. Nationally, only 54% of households have returned the form. Garden City’s rate is (as of April 1st) at 62%. (An interactive census participation map can be found at http://2010.census.gov/2010census/take10map/ )

During the 2000 census, the final participation rate for Garden City was 84%, so we’ve got a way to go to at least match that rate.

We don’t understand why people are reluctant to fill out the form. It took us about five minutes to answer the questions for our family of four, and no postage was required. The benefits to the country are vast - more equitable funding for government projects, and accurate representation in congress.

We have to admit, though, that our main motive for filling out the form was not patriotic. We mainly did it because we really didn’t want to have to be interviewed in person by census takers. We figure there’s close to a 100% chance that they would come to the door at a time that is inconvenient. (With our luck it would be during the season finale of “Lost”...)

So if you haven’t sent back your census form, do so today - or be prepared to have your favorite t.v. show interrupted!
