For the past few months Jane Furey and Jeffrey Fehmel along with 6-12 Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator Jeanette Balantic and Garden City High School Principal Nanine Cuttitta, have been serving as Junior Ambassadors to the Garden City Central Property Owners Association. The Junior Ambassador Program was created by the Central POA and is an ongoing joint venture with Garden City High School through Principal Cuttitta and Ms. Balantic, who spearheaded the program. The purpose of the pilot program is to expose high school students to the ways that the Garden City Village government operates and to encourage more students to get involved in important issues involving the Village.

One of the first projects the Junior Ambassadors were asked to undertake was development of a web site for the Central POA. Working with information provided by the CPOA, and with the help of a web designer, the Junior Ambassadors were able to launch the CPOA’s first web site in approximately one month. The web site provides a single location where village residents can obtain information about upcoming CPOA meetings and CPOA sponsored events. The web site also provides a complete contact list of all members of the CPOA and links to other important web sites in the Village of Garden City. Hopefully, the web site will make it easier for residents to find out information about the CPOA and encourage residents to get more involved in Village affairs.

Another way that the CPOA is trying to encourage more participation is by sponsoring special events and their regular meetings. Recently, the CPOA hosted a discussion by Dr. Robert Scott, the President of Adelphi University, who spoke about new things happening at Adelphi and the relationship that the Village and Adelphi have had for almost one hundred years.

For more information, take a few moments to visit the new CPOA web site at www.gccpoa.org.
