Pomfret/Driscoll Play Well, but Lose Final 2 Games

2010-03-12 / Sports

The Boys hosted the top team in Western New England Prep League today when they played Wilbraham and Monson. Wilbraham was loaded with talent and size, they literally had kids at 6’10, 6’10, 6’8, 6’6, 6’5, and 6’4. They were not only tall however, they also shot pretty well and executed their offense. They jumped out to an early 14 point lead, but the boys did not quit. They battled hard and hung in the game.

The second half we played much better on both sides of the ball. We scored 33 second half points and only gave up 34 to Wilbraham. In their final home game, our three seniors afforded themselves well in the second half as Cameron Bell scored 12 second half points, Leo Driscoll scored 8, and Mike Stickles scored 7. The final score was 77 - 55, but the boys shouldn’t hang their head too low for this one.

The Boys went down swinging as they took on a very strong Cheshire team on Saturday. Cheshire was celebrating their senior day and their seniors came out firing as he hit six first half three pointers. Senior Leo Driscoll also got off to a hot start as he hit three of his first four three pointers to help keep Pomfret in the game. Leo and fellow seniors Cameron Bell and Mike Stickles paced Pomfret with 9, 10, and 8 points respectively in the first half. Though Pomfret was playing well and pretty unselfishly, Cheshire managed to take an 11 point lead at the half.

The second half saw some very good basketball. Both teams battled hard and exchanged baskets for a while, but Cheshire behind Junior Erik Katenda (who was recently offered a full scholarship by Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey)stretched their lead to 19 points. However the boys did not quit and chipped into the lead. Joe Ferro and Andrew Robinson penetrated and created some foul trouble for Cheshire as Danny Gagnon hit three - 3 point baskets. Leo and Cameron both hit late three pointers with Cameron’s being the last shot of the game. The 10 point loss was disappointing but the effort was admirable and showed great heart to close out the season. Though there is typically no MVP in a loss, Mike Stickles saved his best for last as he played his best game of the season.
