The West Hempstead Broncos There is one local team, the Broncos, which allows boys entering first grade to play full contact football, on their 6-7 year old squad. This is an excellent opportunity for first graders to play full contact football, in the Nassau Suffolk Football League. Garden City first graders can get a full season of contact football; most other local programs typically do not allow boys to start playing until they are seven years old. This is a great way for GC boys to play year of football prior to later playing in Thunder, which starts at 7 years old. The NSFL football league has a slightly higher weight limit of 90 pounds, for players on the 6-7 year old team, which may be convenient for players who weigh in the high 80s.

This past year, Garden City first grader, Matthew Mohen, of Locust School, played for the Broncos who went all the way to the NSFL Semi-Final last November, on a team coached by former Garden City High School football star Mike “Sunny” McCutcheon.
