UNITED STATES CENSUS BUREAU

Beginning last month and continuing through late August, Census Bureau temporary field staff will be working within the Village to deliver questionnaires and collect information from those who have not returned their Census questionnaire and verify addresses.

These workers can be identified through identification cards issued by the Census Bureau. Each temporary decennial Census employee will have an official identification card with the employee’s signature and an expiration date. Identification cards for temporary decennial employees do not include a photograph. Regional level employee’s identification cards will have the bearer’s photograph and expiration date. In addition, Field office managers will have the bearer’s photograph and expiration date.

Please note that the Board of Trustees at its meeting on Thursday, March 4th, gave approval for the United States Census to place “Job Available” information cards in the doors of residential homes within the Village of Garden City during the month of March.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME

Daylight Savings Time begins this Sunday, March 14. Residents are reminded that clocks should be set one hour ahead.

SHOP AND DINE IN GARDEN CITY - SUPPORT THE LOCAL MERCHANTS

Mr. John Wilton, of the Chamber of Commerce, Merchants/Committee Group, was in attendance at the last Board of Trustees Meeting and announced that a number of businesses within the business district have expressed deep concern that they are in jeopardy of closing within the near future. It is paramount that we support all businesses within Garden City and I encourage all residents and professionals within Garden City to shop locally. Your patronage will be appreciated and is needed.

Many residents consider shopping and dining in our business districts as “experience shopping” because they meet friends and neighbors along the way and have an opportunity to interact with them. This is in stark contrast to frantically dashing through the crowds in the mall or the big box retailers.

I encourage residents to make a conscious effort to choose Garden City as the place to shop and dine. Customer service, selection and quality are outstanding. While shopping or dining let the merchant know that you appreciate them and all that they offer.

VILLAGE ELECTION - TUESDAY, MARCH 16, 2010

The annual Village Election will be held on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 from 12 Noon until 9:00 p.m. at Village Hall, 351 Stewart Avenue. Village residents will be voting for the following candidates:

John J. Watras Trustee - 2 year term

Nicholas P. Episcopia Trustee - 2 year term

Brian C. Daughney Trustee - 2 year term

Since the incorporation of the Village in 1919, members of the Board of Trustees in Garden City have been elected by a non-partisan vote of residents in accordance with the policies of the Community Agreement.

ABSENTEE BALLOT APPLICATIONS

Absentee Ballot applications to be used in conjunction with the General Village Election on March 16, 2010, are available at the Village Hall, 351 Stewart Avenue. THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE VILLAGE BLOOD DRIVE

I would like to thank the residents and employees who donated blood last Tuesday, March 9, 2010.

I am pleased to report that over thirty (30) pints of blood were collected. You can feel proud of your personal involvement in helping those who depend on blood for life giving support

Since there is no substitute for human blood, and no way of knowing when it may be needed to save or sustain the life of a family member, a co-worker, a friend or other members of the community, we must be sure that enough blood is available at all times to meet the needs of our area’s hospitals and their patients.

Again, thank you and we look forward to your participation in our next blood drive which will take place in July.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES’ MEETING SCHEDULE

The next regularly scheduled Board of Trustees’ meeting will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2010, at 8:00 p.m.

TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD E-CYCLING PROGRAM

I have been advised by the Town of Hempstead that they are holding an E-Cycling Program on Saturday, March 13, 2010, so you can make the “green choice” and e-cycle. Simply bring your old computers, TVs, DVD players, VCR’s, computer components and other electronic equipment to Town Parking Lot L2, on Division Avenue, Levittown 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The town accepts computers, peripherals, TVs electronic games, radios, DVD and VHS players and more. All computers are shredded, destroying sensitive computer data.

Mark your calendar for the next event that will be held on October 3rd. Thank you for helping keep our planet “green”. For more please call the Town of Hempstead Department of Sanitation at 378-2200.

VILLAGE’S WEB SITE

I encourage residents to periodically utilize the Village’s website for information regarding the Village’s operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.gardencityny.net. For your convenience, listed on the Village’s home page under the Heading of Administration is a sub-heading “Village Map and Key Areas of Interest” which contains direct links to various schools, parks, the Village Yard, etc.
