WOW! This past weekend really gave us a touch and look of spring and it was mighty pleasant, too. The snow has nearly all melted except for the mountains of brown and grey snow that had to be heaved up in certain areas where there was no other place to put it, but that, too, should be gone by the time you read this. The snow drops are blooming, the forsythia and Korean Azalea are also in bud and don’t forget that we spring ahead this Saturday night to Daylight Savings Time. I would not want you to be late for anything.
Things have not been good down in Florida with the cold spell that attacked their tomato crop as we can see by the price of them in the stores. They have had a tough time of it in Florida and many will be coming back up north to get warm again.
One lady, Ginny Fortney, will have no problem keeping warm down in Naples. Ginny once again entered a pro-am dance competition which was composed of dancers from all over the state of Florida and even the Carolinas. Performing both International and American styles of the Tango, Waltz, Foxtrot and Quickstep as well as Rumba, Cha-Cha and Swing, she competed in 40 - yes forty “heats” during the day-long session, receiving top honors in 36. This was her fourth competition and Ginny still says and feels that dancing puts you on a natural “high” and provides the best kind of aerobics for making you full of happy energy. You may now take a nap to rest up as for some, just reading this could make one tired. Good for you, Ginny, and keep it up.
Did you read about all the great programs that the ladies of the Community Club have planned for the month of March? I always said that if you put eight to ten ladies in a room for one hour, they would come up with enough ideas of what to do to keep informed, entertained and stimulated to do more than just stay home and watch the screen. This article proves me right so keep it up, all of you.
Happy birthday wishes go to Vincent Prestyly, who will be doing his celebrating on the 15th of March; to Mel Griffin, who will celebrate his special day on the 16th (maybe you could get together and share a cake); to Tom Bradley, who will be blowing out the candles on his cake on the 12th; and to Rose Passidomo, who will do the same of the 15th of March. May you all have a wonderful day and a year filled with health and happiness with many more years to come.
The ladies of the Auxiliary of our American Legion Post, in addition to getting ready for the big annual Birthday Bash at the Senior Center on Sunday March 21st have also held the Nominating Committee meeting and brought forth the slate of Officers for 2010-2011. Joan Nedelka will serve as President and also as Treasurer, Pauline Rudkin will tackle 1st Vice-President and also Secretary, and Rose Forgione will serve as 2nd Vice President. These ladies work hard and get things done and are not afraid to tackle any task. All the best to all of you in the coming year.
These ladies also joined the men of the Post for “Law and Order Night” and presented plaques and medals to Patrick Gaffney, a Junior member of the Fire Dept. and a Senior at Garden City High. He saved the life of a man who was chocking; to David Carpenter from G.C. Special Police; and to Stephen Touhy from the G.C. Police. Congrats to you all.
Get ready for the Easter holidays by starting off with the Sunday, March 21st concert by the Long Island Choral Society at 4 p.m. at the Cathedral of The Incarnation. They will be performing the St. Matthew Passion by Bach and a better group you cannot find outside of New York City. Advance sales are $18 per person or $25 at the door. Parking is free and close by. You may also see someone you know singing with the Chorus.
Spring has gotten to Brenda Wydler who has reported that the increased singing of the birds in her yard and the early bulbs coming up have put her in the mood for gardening. You all know I am sure that your gardens as well as your house look forward to spring cleaning. Your rooms look fresher even if you only move a few knick-knacks to other places and plump the cushions. The yard needs a good raking to sweep up all the twigs and stuff that have come down during the winter. Take it easy though as you cannot do it all at once. Save some energy to spring ahead one hour on Saturday night. See you next week.
