In Memoriam
Dorothy Schueler, age 81, of Mansfield, Massachusetts, formerly of Sarasota, FL, East Hampton, and Garden City, died on February 22, 2010.
Born Dorothy Mae Lemcke on May 29, 1928 in Brooklyn, she was raised by parents Anna and Frank with siblings Eleanor and Frank in Garden City on Wickham Road. Dorothy graduated from Garden City High School in 1946, Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham College) in 1949, and completed her Master’s in Education from Adelphi University in 1970. Dorothy taught English at Manhasset High School from 1970-1987.
In 1950 she married Raymond Willard Schueler of Bellerose, at Garden City Country Club. After several years of traveling for Ray’s career in advertising, the couple settled down in Garden City (Locust Street) with daughters Diane, Janet, Joan and Kim.
Dorothy loved her summer home in Springs of East Hampton, where she pursued her passions for boating on the ‘Lit’l Dot’, fishing in Gardiner’s Bay, clamming at Accabonac Harbor and gardening. After retirement she and Ray spent winters in Sarasota, FL, returning to the east end of LI for the spring, summer and early fall seasons. Dorothy was an accomplished musician who enjoyed both playing and composing music for the piano and electronic keyboard. A prolific and published writer, Dorothy wrote numerous magazine and newspaper articles and authored two books: To All My Children and Medical Snare. Never a quitter, Dorothy was a force to be reckoned with and a true champion of the underdog.
Including her four daughters, Dorothy is survived by eight grandchildren: Andre, James, Steven, Laura, Josh, David, Adam and Andrew. In addition, she leaves behind many whose lives she has touched and will be remembered for her unique personality, intelligence and extraordinary energy. Rosemary “Rarie” McGloin Nappi
Rarie Nappi, age 66, long-time resident of Garden City, NY, devoted wife of Thomas Nappi, passed away on February 20, 2010, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was a loving mother to Kerin and Bill Schieck of Garden City NY, Tricia and Mark Karr of Malverne, NY, Tommy and Julie Nappi of Brooklyn, NY , and Laura and Kevin Connolly, of Hampton Bays, NY. She was adored by her eight grandchildren-Will, Caroline, and Connor Schieck, Kaitrin, Jack and Brett Karr, and Wilson and Anna Nappi.
Rarie grew up in West Hempstead, and was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, Molloy College, and Adelphi University. She was an elementary school teacher in Lindenhurst, NY before starting her family. She belonged to the Church of St. Anne in Garden City, where she was an active parishioner for almost 40 years, teaching religious education and volunteering in the parish. When her children were of school age, Rarie returned to teaching and worked at Garden Manor Playschool in Garden City for over 17 years. Rarie was a self taught artist in her younger years, and she used this creative spirit as a nursery school teacher.
Rarie and Tom were truly best friends and had a wonderful marriage for more than 41 years. They always enjoyed each other’s company and loved to go to restaurants, take rides in the car, and vacation together, especially their annual fall foliage trips and beach vacations.
Rarie was very devoted to her family and always attended her children’s sporting events when they were younger, spent time with them at the beach, enjoyed regular family dinners, and encouraged them in all that they did. She loved children and was delighted to welcome each of her eight grandchildren into this world. She always loved spending time with them, and they always brought a smile to her face, even as her memory faded.
Her family and friends are all so grateful that she touched our lives, and she will live in our hearts forever.
A Funeral Mass was held on February 24th, 2010 at the Church of St. Anne in Garden City, NY followed by interment at St. Charles Cemetery. Donations in Rarie’s memory can be sent to the Litwin-Zucker Alzheimer’s Research Fund, 125 Community Drive, Great Neck, NY 11021
