A Word From The Publisher

This week’s issue contains a great deal of information about the creation of the budgets for both the school board and village board. We urge residents to become familiar with them because undoubtedly both boards will have to make some cuts this year. What those cuts will be are to be determined in the coming weeks, and the public’s input is vital to the process.

Recently we received comments that we should limit the discussion of certain topics in our letters page. We respectfully decline to do so. Our policy has always been to let the people have their voices heard in the letters column and to use nearly all letters we receive. We don’t use anonymous letters or ones that are abusive. Beyond that, letters just have to have some local connection - they have to either be about a local topic or from a local resident.

Frankly, the reasons we love letters to the editor are twofold. First, we very strongly believe that successful communities are those in which people feel they have a voice, and we want to provide that voice. Second, the letters are one of the most read sections of the paper, and from a business perspective that’s a good thing for us. People love to read the letters, even (especially?) if they don’t agree with them.

So keep on sending us your letters. There’s always room for more.
