Wins Internship At United Nations
Jackie Ramos Beyer
Mrs. Jackie Ramos Beyer, formerly of Garden City has won a highly competitive internship at the United Nations and has been here since October working for the Women’s International League of Peace and Freedom - the oldest women’s peace organization in the country, founded in 1915.
Jackie’s work will culminate this March at the 54th session of the Commission for the Status of Women at the United Nations. Participants are gathering from around the world to discuss the Global 15 year review process of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action from 1995. Jackie will gain temporary delegate status, attend official and non-government organizations(NGO) sessions, and contribute to the official documentation of both official and NGO meetings. She has attended briefings with UN ambassadors from Costa Rica and Turkey along with representatives of other NGO’s including Amnesty International, Global Policy Forum and the Security Council Report. “I feel so humbled, they’re so passionate about helping people who are suffering. It is just amazing to be a part of it.” The commission will give women from all over the world an opportunity to meet, engage with activists for human rights, and discuss health & safety issues for women.
“If by my work, I can make someone’s life better, it’s well worth it; I definitely see people making a difference in the world.” Jackie will continue her graduate studies at Portland State University after the internship is over, focusing on peaceful solutions to world problems.
