Last week I told you to look for signs of spring and we got more snow. Well, just to comfort you, there is a weeping willow on the grounds of the Cherry Valley Club getting a nice yellow tint to it so don’t despair. There were also some ladies in town who took advantage of the snow to stay home and get a jump-start on their spring cleaning so when the snow stops they will be ahead of the game.
The Ladies Luncheon/Bridge at the Casino was postponed to this past week and they finally got their corned beef sandwiches and their game of bridge. They had a full house and beat the snow this time. Enjoying the afternoon were Annemarie Gordon, Jane Cox, Rosemary Brown (playing duplicate and winning a prize of course), Georgene Harrison, Miriam Benack, Dian Kendrick, Barbara Flanagan, Florence Beach , and of course Susan Giangrasso . Susan runs the bridge and does a fine job of it. All the players are very grateful to her for the job she does.
The Auxiliary of the G.C. Community Church installed its new officers for the coming year recently and they are: President Linda Gambardella , Vice President Robin Laisure , Secretary Christine O’Neill , Treasurer Martha Yasso and Publicity Director Janice Salem . Delicious desserts baked by Hospitality Director Kimberly Pauley and a game of fun auction ended the evening on a high note. Auction proceeds were donated to the “30 Hour Famine” being sponsored by the youth of the church. Good for you ladies.
The next Thursday Luncheon sponsored by the Community Church will be held on Thursday, March 11th when Anne Teleisha will speak on “Senior Concerns” and on March 25th there will be a game of Trivial Pursuit. March hostesses are Kimberly Pauley and Carole Halvorsen . This is open to all senior residents of the Village. If you need a ride, just call the Church Office at 746-1700 and they will arrange one for you. It’s not only a fun day but you have company and a good program too.
The folks over at Clark Gardens are keeping you busy with their Fireside Chats during this month of March. On Sunday, March 14th at 1 pm. Doug Going Photography will take you on a Poetic Journey through Humanity. You will be comfortable in your seat and travel from Africa, through South and Southeast Asia and enjoy exotic, weather-etched faces merge with landscapes and monuments accompanied by poignant melodies from around the world. All this and refreshments too will be $8 for members and $10 for non-members and you don’t have to pack and unpack as you travel. That is worth it and so is the ample and free parking.
Whoops! We missed out on saying happy birthday to Douglas Dieterich, who celebrated his special day on March 1st and to Mary Gagliardo who did her celebrating on March 2nd. It must have been the changing of the short month of February or the snow - you take your pick. We hope you both had a great day and a wonderful year is coming up for you also. May you have nothing but good health and much happiness with many more years to come. In addition, we promise not to do that again. Many happy returns of the day to you both.
Ellen Accardi, Nassau South Representative on the Board of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York District Two, represented the Clubs of Nassau South at the President’s Council this past week held at Old Bethpage Restoration Village. She happily greeted all the clubs under her jurisdiction and they all enjoyed a wonderful program with a fantastic selection of desserts between programs. We should all be grateful to those among us who work so hard to give us not only good but worthwhile programs to enjoy. You did a good job, Ellen.
Now don’t forget the Ides of March (it used to be Income Tax Day as well as the day that Julius Caesar was murdered.) It also marks the middle of the month and we should be able to see some improvement in the weather by then. NOTE that I said SHOULD as nothing is really firm during the month of March.
Keep the shovel handy and I’ll see you next week.
