spring
is coming and with it so many changes that I do hope you will keep an eye out for them. The first change will be the return of Daylight Savings Time on Saturday, March 14th. That evening we set the clocks ahead one hour (SPRING AHEAD) just before you go to bed and then you will wake up to the right time. It may take a few days to adjust to the time and the light but at the end of that week on Saturday, March 20th spring will arrive. Now I have no guarantee on the weather that week or any week in March, but at least we should see some signs that things are improving. The signs to look for are: the weeping willow trees will start to turn a light yellow, the snowdrops will be blooming and so will the crocuses. In addition, by the end of the month, you should see daffodils making their appearance and the final sign is to look for Easter bonnets. I am hoping they make a comeback and, if not, I have plenty on hand. Now we only have to cope with bad weather for four more weeks. Enjoy!
The Cherry Valley Club held its first Dinner/Bridge on February 17th and the club looked sparkly after its January cleaning. Enjoying the evening were: Joan Whiting, Grace and Nick Basile, Janet and Bruce Littlejohn, Miriam and Dick Benack, the Heckens, the Schnells, and many others. There were nineteen tables in play following dinner and the first small slam was made in six clubs by Mr. and Mrs. Flaherty . The two door prizes were boxes of Valentine chocolates (in case you didn’t get any on the 14th) and the winners were Carolyn Kaiser and George Salem . Bridge chariman George Rivara announced that the next Bridge would be held on Wednesday, March 17th. Corned beef anyone?
Eric Powers will be the speaker on Sunday, March 7th at 1 p.m. at Clark Gardens “Fireside Chat.” His topic will be “Birds and Birding” and will cover why birds fly south for the winter and why they sing. He will bring many artifacts to illustrate his talk. Ranger Powers is a biologist, teacher, photographer, outdoorsman, and overall nature lover. He recently started an ecotourism company your connection to nature to fund his numerous wildlife conservation projects. The fee is $8 for members, $10 for non-members and refreshments will be served. This is a popular place to gain information and visit with some of your neighbors who volunteer there, Marie Ramos, Virginia Musante, and Mary Lou Pfiffer .

Happy birthday wishes go to Irene Lincks, who will be celebragting her special day just before February takes leave of us and Jane MacDougall will be doing likewise. May both ladies have a wonderful day filled with surprises and a year filled with good health and happiness with many more years to come. Not to be leftout, March will start off with Dorothy Tattersall doing her celebrating on March 1st and Gus Swainson doing his on March 5th. Dorothy Tattersall tells us that her late husband Wilbur also served in the Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart for his efforts. May both Dorothy and Gus also have a great day and a wonderful year coming up to enjoy in health and happiness.
Kathleen Rice , Nassau County District Attorney will be honored at the Spring Luncheon of the American Association of University Women’s L.I. Interbranch. It will take place on Saturday, March 27th at noon at Milleridge Inn in Jericho, NY. An honor well deserved, I would say.
Everyone knows that you should keep baking soda in your refrigerator to help prevent odors but you can also put some in your dishwasher and garbage disposal to keep them fresh smelling. A solution of baking soda and water will remove coffee and tea stains from cups and pots when you use it to wash them. All Earth friendly.
Have a good week and I’ll see you next Friday.
