2010-02-26 / Community

Many of the people in this area have marched with Irish County Associations in the many St. Patrick’s Day parades on Long Island and in Manhattan. The Irish County Associations will be the subject of the presentation at the meeting of the Irish Cultural Society on Tuesday, March 9 at 8:00 p.m. in the Garden City Library, 60 Seventh Street, across the street from the Garden City Hotel. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Dr. Miriam Nyhan will discuss the unique presence and important roles of the county associations in New York City during the years following World War II. The discussion will be based on her extensive research using oral interviews and archival research and on her analysis of these special associations, their yearly activities, and their enthusiastic participants. She will outline the significance that county associations had for post-war immigrants from Ireland. As part of her talk, Professor Nyhan will describe the Ireland the immigrants left and the New York to which they arrived.

Miriam Nyhan is Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow at Glucksman Ireland House, New York University. She received her M.Phil. from University College, Cork and her PhD. from the European University Institute. Dr. Nyhan is the author of “Are You Still Below?: The Ford Marina Plant, Cork 1917-1984.”

After wishing everyone a happy St. Patrick’s Day, President Martin Kelly will invite all in the audience to the Irish Festival at Hofstra University on Sunday, March 14. He will also announce the concert by the Irish singing group, Cherish the Ladies, at Hofstra’s Adams Playhouse on March 27.
