ON SATURDAY, February 27, as part of a national initiative by Spirit of Women(r) to promote heart health, Winthrop-University Hospital is inviting the community to “Dance Your Health Out.” The free program will be held at Winthrop’s Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard at the corner of Second Street in Mineola from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the event will feature group dancing, dancing demonstrations, Karaoke by Winthrop staff, health screenings, educational information, and activities for children. “Families with children and retirees will take time out of their busy schedules to have some fun while they are learning more about the prevention of heart disease,” said Deborah Johnson-Schiff, RN, BSN, CNN, Senior Vice President of Winthrop. “We plan on having activities run throughout the day, so people should feel free to stay for as little or as long as their time will allow.” Dance(r) for Health is powered by Spirit of Women, a national network of hospitals and healthcare providers across the United States that ascribe to the highest standards of excellence in women’s health, education and community outreach. Police Report: Mischief and Mayhem

On February 11, during overnight hours unknown persons smashed a passenger side window of a 2003 Jeep, which was parked on Franklin Court. Cosmetics, CDs and a phone charger were missing... On February 10, during a snow storm, Detective Sergeant Batkowski observed a 58-year-old Roosevelt man driving a car on Franklin Avenue, then allegedly striking a light pole near Second Street. The motorist allegedly drove away from that scene and he was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident... Detectives are investigating reports of larceny that occurred on February 14, at CVS, Franklin Avenue. At 5:51 p.m., a subject described as a male, black, 5’9”tall, medium build, wearing a blue vest, blue shirt, blue pants and black sneakers allegedly stole several boxes of Mucinex there. Later, at almost 7 p.m., a male, white, medium build, about 20 to 30 years old, wearing a black leather jacket, black shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers, allegedly stole several boxes of over-the-counter medicines... On February 15, detectives arrested a 56-year-old West Hempstead man for allegedly leaving the scene of a car accident on February 9 at Adelphi University where he allegedly struck a female victim with the car’s mirror as he drove his car on campus, before fleeing the scene.The female suffered an arm injury... On February 11, detectives arrested a 21-year-old female and a 26-year old male, both from Garden City, after they allegedly used a forged prescription from a GC doctor to purchase Oxycodone from CVS. Evidently, a prescription pad had been stolen from the doctor on February 8. The female was charged with possession of a controlled substance and for possession of a forged instrument and the male was charged with forgery and possession of a forged instrument. He was also charged with criminal contempt after it was learned that he had violated a court order of protection to stay away from his female companion... On February 12, unknown persons removed a spare tire from a 2004 Jeep parked in field 6E... On February 13, PO Florio while stopped at a red light at Clinton Road, heard a car repeatedly blowing its horn at him from behind his car. When the light turned green, a 68-year-old Hempstead man continued to blow his horn and then made an unsafe lane change. Later, PO Florio stopped this motorist, who was allegedly driving while impaired with alcohol-and he was charged for the latter offense as well as for unnecessary use of a horn, unsafe lane change and for unlicensed operation... On February 11, officers responded to the scene of a 2-car accident at NHP Road/Stewart Avenue. One of the operators had allegedly fled on foot, while the other driver, a 56-year-old Bellrose man had an injury to his chest. A short while later it was determined that the suspect’s 1994 Jeep had been stolen from the Ronkonkoma train station but had not yet been reported. During that same time frame, a 2000 Jeep had been taken from a Clinch Avenue residence-and there had also been an attempted larceny of another Jeep at a Jackson Street residence nearby.Both those cars were impounded as possible evidence... During this past week, there were reports of entry into unlocked cars at Kingsbury Road, Washington Avenue, Kenwood Road, Pell Terrace, John Street, and Heath Place. Loose change, a wallet, and GPS units were taken...

FIRE RESPONSES:

WIRES CAME DOWN at East Drive on February 10... THERE WAS A fire in the engine of a truck parked in Field 6E on February 11... A SNOW blower being repaired in the basement of a Franklin Avenue building was removed because of the odor of gas in that building, on the same day... ON FEBRUARY 13, an oil burner blow back occurred at a NHP Road location... FD SHUT OFF a malfunctioning oil burner at a Poplar Street house on the same day... FIREMEN FOUND an unintentional activation of a beam detector at the pool at the Adelphi Sports Complex on February 14. Excess condensation was the cause... NATIONAL GRID was notified when a resident stated he smelled gas in front of his house at Grove Street on February 15...
