Concert To Benefit INN

2010-02-19 / Community

Maybe March 7th would be a good Sunday to go out and hear some folk music. Or perhaps some Swing. No, wait, maybe some Classical music. Or how about some avant-garde bluegrass? What about Eastern European vocal music? Or Gospel? Or R&B? Or African Drumming? Perhaps you should go hear music where they serve the tastiest, homemade food. Or perhaps the deciding factor should be to buy a ticket where the money goes to help people who need it.

On Sunday, March 7th, you can do all of that at one place.

UUCCN (corner of Stewart Avenue & Nassau Boulevard in Garden City www.uuccn.org) will be hosting a concert to benefit The Interfaith Nutrition Network. www.the-inn.org

Start with a trifecta of folk music performers. Joe Iadanza’s music spans the genres of folk, rock, roots and Americana, at times harkening back to a bygone era with its European jazz feel. Lucky 13 unites the talents of Cathy Kreger, Marci Geller & Diane Garisto. Between them, these three have sung with everyone from Billy Joel to Taj Mahal to Regis Philbin. Award-winning singer/songwriter Josh Joffen has delighted audiences from NY to Seattle and from Chicago down to Kerrville, TX.

The Barbara Garriel Trio will show it does mean a thing, ‘cause they do got that swing. Marty Cutler takes an old instrument (the banjo) and plays very new music (there’s nothing to compare it to, because no one else has played this type of music yet). A diverse pianist of great imagination, Benjamin Steinhardt’s playing straddles the worlds of classical music, new music, and music theater. Christine and Dinu Ghezzo, a father & daughter duo will perform adaptations of Eastern European folk songs as well some other unexpected musical surprises. They have performed together and individually throughout the United States and Europe, and are internationally recognized for their soulful interpretations of folk songs from around the world. Apostle G Marie Carroll Has thrilled audiences up and down the Eastern seaboard with her powerful voice, her unique stylings, and her heartfelt singing. Amy and Sharon Beltain bring the heartbeat of Africa through drumming. 15-year-old pro Mason Sansonia will be back to tear down the house, as he did last year. Musical Director Michael Sansonia (he’s conducted and performed on & off-Broadway, in Asia, Africa, Europe, and all over the USA) will be leading a seven piece band to accompany any or all performers. And he’s promised to do a few songs himself.

A luscious, eclectic menu is being coordinated by award-winning chef and caterer Anita Gesky.

The aim of the INN is Serving Hungry & Homeless Long Islanders with Dignity, Respect and Love. They are a working model of how to unite the community to overcome the challenge of hunger and homelessness, here on Long Island.
