Enes Bongarzone
Enes Bongarzone Enes Bongarzone

Enes Bengarzone, a/k/a Enes Pacella, born on June 15, 1913, died peacefully on February 4, 2010, in Escondido, CA.

Enes Pacella/Bongarzone taught Biology at Garden City High School beginning in 1957. She later moved to the Jr. High where she taught Biology and other science programs until her retirement 25 years later.

Enes was dearly loved by students and parents, for making science fun. Her animated lectures and exciting lab experiments were the envy of all.

She was on a mission of life-long learning, and often obtained government grants to pursue research during school summer breaks. She obtained National Science Foundation grants to study radiation biology, molecular biology, physics and genetics.

Joan Wathey
Joan Wathey Enes was the widow of the esteemed psychiatrist, Dr. Emilio Robert Pacella. In 1962 she married Physics teacher Elito Bongarzone, who passed away in 2003. Enes is survived by two daughters, Dr. Phyllis Pacella, a Behavioral Therapist for children with developmental disorders, and Vita Banks, a retired Garden City teacher of gifted and talented children. She also leaves Grandhildren Kristi Barasch, Frank Ventra and Suzanne Ventra, and great grandsons Joseph Barasch and Kristopher Barasch.

John W. Barnes

John Werner Barnes “Jack”, 84, a long time resident of Garden City, and more recently a resident of Tobyhanna, PA with a home on Saint Simons Island, GA died February 7, 2010 at Brunswick Hospital of the Southeast Georgia Health System.

He was a native and resident, until retirement, of Garden City, NY, the only son of the late Walter and Lillian Barnes.

Jack had a lifelong love of aviation and was recognized by the Royal Aeronautical Society, Great Britain as a duly elected Fellow for his knowledge and achievements in aeronautical engineering.

As a child, he enjoyed carving detailed model airplanes and spending time at historic Roosevelt Air Field watching and helping pilots with their planes or peering into the Curtiss Airplane factory, both located near his family’s home. He graduated from Garden City High School in 1943. He then enrolled at The Citadel, in Charleston, SC until he was old enough to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served as a Flight Engineer until the end of World War II. He then returned to The Citadel as a veteran and earned his B.S. in Engineering.

Upon graduation, he accepted a job designing bridges in New Jersey where he met and married his wife, Nancy.

He returned to Garden City, NY where he began his 37 year career with Fairchild Republic Aviation, in Farmingdale, NY. He held various engineering and management positions in the design and manufacture of military and commercial aircraft. These included, Design Engineer on the F-105, Manager of Structural Design of the A-10 Thunderbolt II, also known as the “warthog”, and Manager of Airframe Design of the T46-A. His career also included special assignments with Boeing in Seattle, WA, Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage, NY and a German airplane manufacturer in Munich, Germany.

He was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying every chance he could. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), Member of the Garden City Volunteer Fire Department, and a Life Member of the National Model Railroad Association.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy; and his children Susan Barnes of Lilydale, NY, Bruce (Joan) Barnes of Garden City, NY, Robert (Aimee) Barnes of Shawnee, KS, and Betsy Barnes of Saint Simons Island, GA. Beloved grandchildren are Bryan, Matthew, and Christopher Barnes of Garden City, NY and Meghan, Sarah, and Rachel Barnes of Shawnee, KS.

Family will receive friends on Monday, February 15, 2010 in Garden City, NY at Fairchild Sons Funeral Home, 1201 Franklin Avenue, Garden City, New York 11530 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A private internment will follow at Memorial Cemetery of St. John’s Church in Laurel Hollow, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to The Salvation Army.

Lucinda (Cindy) Beneventi Findley

Lucinda (Cindy) Beneventi Findley, 68, died Saturday at Beacon Place Hospice in Greensboro, N.C. She resided in Garden City until 1970, and was a graduate of Garden City High School. Cindy was a loved and respected member of the community. The wife of the late Dr. William R. Findley, she was active in several organizations including the DAR, O. Henry Women’s Club, Ikebana International, The Greensboro Mini Club, The Greensboro Council of Garden Clubs, The Garden Club of North Carolina and the National Garden Club. She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth F. Caran of Apex, N.C., and Linda F. Kozlowski of Hong Kong; and her grandchildren, Athena and Marcus Caran of Apex, N.C. Services will be held at Community in Christ Presbyterian Church on Friday, February 12 and arangements are being handled by Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home on N. Elm St. in Greensboro. Joan Wathey

Joan passed away on January 29th, 2010. Joan, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida was the daughter of Al and Lillian (Wiedmann) Stilz. She grew up on Kingsbury Road and lived on Hayes Street for many years. She moved to Highland Beach, Florida, with her husband, Herbert (Herb) Schramm in 1977. He passed away in 1996. She remarried George Wathey and continued living in Florida. Joan is survived by her daughter of Boyton Beach and son of Palm Beach Gardens. Also, a sister of Garden City, cousins Janet, Carole, Marijane and an Aunt Evelyn of Arizona. Both her children, Karin Straleau and husband Scott, Robert, Schramm and wife Dina and sister Sandra Engelke were at her bedside. Some of her great talents were exhibited in her paintings. She was strong willed and a very positive person. Joan also leaves her granddaughter, Tiffney, whom she loved dearly. She will be greatly missed.
