Historical Society Calls On Student Artists
The Garden City Historical Society’s President, Brian Pinnola, and Education Chairperson, Mary Jane Caldwell, presented certificates to winners of the 2009 Children’s Juried Art Contest at last year’s artists’ reception.
The Garden City Historical Society announces its fifth annual Juried Children’s Art Contest, “Landscapes of Garden City”. We invite students in grades kindergarten through 12 who reside in Garden City to participate. All submissions must illustrate a landscape located in the Village of Garden City. Drawings must be created in pencil, color pencil, or pen and ink, and artwork must not exceed 18 by 24 inches, including mat. For high school students only (grades 9-12), we will again have a photography/computer graphics category. The deadline for all submissions is Friday, March 26, 2010.
Attention Kids: There’s quite an assortment of beautiful landscapes to choose from in Garden City. Think about its parks and golf courses, roadways and schoolyards, the bird sanctuary and individual neighborhoods. Let your imaginations lead you.
The contest has four art categories: K-1, Grades 2 through 5, Middle School, and High School. Photography/computer graphics will be a separate category for high school students only. The contest will be judged by local residents with art backgrounds. Awards will be presented to First Place, Second Place and Honorable Mention winners in each category.
The Historical Society will host a reception for the winning artists and their families on Sunday, April 11, at The Garden City Historical Society Museum, 109 Eleventh Street. Awards will be presented at that time. A Children’s Art Exhibit including all entries will be open to the public at the Museum on two weekends: April 10-11 and 17-18, from 1 to 3 p.m. On the two Saturday afternoons, parents and family members are also encouraged to stop in and browse through the Society’s consignment shop, the A.T. Stewart Exchange, on our Lower Level.
For further information, a student permission form, or to arrange for submission of artwork, please contact Mary Jane Caldwell, education committee chairperson, at 516-248-5917.
