Socially Speaking
Boy, are we having a spate of Good Luck or what? While Washington, D.C. is tied up in Grid Lock as I write this, at least it is not because of Congress, but the snow measured in feet and not inches. We could not even measure it in inches here at home and most of us are very happy about that. It’s time for a little luck.
In the more HAPPY NEWS area, is the news that Barbara Seale has just welcomed her first Great Grandchild and does she have a happy smile on her face. All the best to the baby, you, and the parents.
Those Monday Movies keep doing well and attracting more and more of our gentlemen as part of the audience. One of these men came sporting a very interesting cap done in all different plaids. With the pom-pom on top he must have made a trip to Scotland for it. Among some of the ladies in attendance recently were Martha Widner, Paula Howe, and Regina Dowling. Sal Catania is doing a solo now and a great job he is making of it.
Justine Butz and Carole Rilling, Co-Chairs of the Social Bridge for AAUW here in Garden City will hold their next Bridge on February 22 nd . This littler Round Robin group is doing very well - again mostly due to the Co-Chairs and those interested in a friendly game.
It is never too soon to think of Gardens and Clark Bontanic Gardens will be holding their famous “Pruning Basics” with John Diegnan on Sunday, Feb. 28th at 1 p.m., as part of their Fire side Chat programs. John is involved with Nassau County Cooperative Extension and also serves on the Board of Directors at Old Westbury Gardens. The fee is $8 for members and $10 for non-members and it is a good time of the year to think about pruning. Dian Kendrick and Marie Ramos are very active in the workings of Clark gardens so you will usually find a friendly face at these meetings. Happy birthday wishes go to Irene Christie (and to her twin Brother) who will be sharing February 13 th as their special day. We also send Birthday wishes to Alice Mara, who will be doing a double celebration - her Birthday and Valentine’s Day are one and the same. May you all have a great day and a year filled with good health and much happiness with many more years to come.
Happy Wedding Anniversary wishes go to Madeline and Ivor Buston, who will be celebrating 50 plus years of wedded bliss. May you have a wonderful day and a year filled with health and happiness in which to enjoy another year of togetherness.
Adelphi University’s Music Department under the Directorship of Michael Hume presented the Jupiter String quartet this past Friday evening. It was a good evening (no snow) with a wonderful program that included a String quartet in B-Flat Major by Ludwig Van Beethoven and following the Intermission a String Quartet in F Major “American” by Antonin Dvorak. The second number on the program between these two was a world premiere of “Ramshackle Songs” by Dan Visconti. The composer was in attendance and spoke about his composition, The evening started with a Wine and Cheese Reception and among those attending from Garden City were: Joan Kuster, Carmel Quill, Anne-Marie Smith and Grace Murphy-Christian. The concert played to a full house in the concert hall and a wonderful evening was had by all.
For those who like to get things set on your calendars early you can put down the St. Joseph’s Rosary Altar Society’s Friday, March 19 th sandwich, dessert, card party from 12 noon to 4 p.m. in the St. Joseph’s School Gymnasium. The tab is $21 per person with table prizes, lucky bucks, and raffle prizes. While this is two days after St. Patrick’s Day you can still celebrate. Reservations are being accepted by Ann Paulson at 73 Brompton Road, in Garden City or Marie Kelly , at 27 Clinton Road, Garden City, NY 11530. Corned Beef (what else) and Turkey will be the featured sandwiches but you can request Tuna if needed.
You are now down to the wire for getting a St. Valentine’s Day gift for that special someone so get yourself busy. Flowers and perfume are always appreciated but you and think out of the box and don’t forget the lovely card.
