Emily Menges (L), Tara DeAngelo (C) and Jenna DeAngelo (R) finished 1-2-3 The girl’s varsity track team captured another conference championship on Sunday at St. Anthony’s. Coaches Fregosi, Skrivanek and Lucas brought out one of the deeper and well rounded teams in the past few years and literally ran away from the competition. The Trojans took home the conference plaque with a dominating 230 points, easily outdistancing runner up New Hyde Park’s 60 points.

The team was led to the title with outstanding performances from Michelle Rotondo - winner of the high jump, the 55 meter hurdles and the 600 meter race, Emily Menges returning to the track with two first place finishes - winning the 1000 meter and 300 meter races, Katie O’Neill the 1500 meter winner, Molly Josephs won the 1500m race walk, Jen Gerland took first in the 3000 meters and all three relay teams also took home the gold. Running the 4x200 were Taylor Hennig, Jenna DeAngelo, Taryn Schmelzinger and Catherine Cafaro, the 4x400 winners were Laura Jaeger, Victoria Chimento, Kelly Punturo and Katie O’Neill, while the 4x800 winners were Tara DeAngelo, Kelly Tierney, Liz Weber and Jen Gerland.

Scoring significant points that helped build the lead for GC and propel them to the title were second place finishers - Jenna DeAngelo in both the 300 and 1000 meter races, Sarah Rubino in the 1500m, Catherine Sullivan - in her first race walk competition, Emma Gallagher in the 600 meter. And in field events Taryn Schmelzinger was the runner up in the high jump, while Dana Famiglietti was second in the triple jump. Other scorers were Tara DeAngelo with third in the 1000m, Lauren Diller was fifth in the 1500m, Alexis Yeboah-Kodie was third in the 300m, Liz Weber took fifth in the 3000m, Monica Mohacsi was fifth in the 55m hurdles, Taryn took third in the 55m dash while Catherine Cafaro took fourth in the same race and Taylor Hennig captured third in the 600m. Other field event scorers were triple jumpers Lauren Reale (3rd) and Paulette Mohacsi (5th) and long jumpers Alexis Yeboah-Kodie (3rd) and Dana Famiglietti (4th), while Emily Menges closed out her shot put career with a fourth place finish.

Coming up tomorrow night are the County Championships at Suffolk Community College and although they will face some stiff competition, the Garden City girls appear to be primed for a run at a fourth consecutive county title for coaches Fregosi, Skrivanek and Lucas.
