In response to the earthquake rescue effort taking place in Haiti, students from the Waldorf School of Garden City - in conjunction with our sister schools throughout the New York area (the Brooklyn Waldorf School, the Rudolf Steiner School in Manhattan, and the Green Meadow Waldorf School in Chestnut Ridge, New York) - have organized a massive coin-drive. Parents, students, and community members are encouraged to donate whatever change they have towards the humanitarian effort.
“Not only will our action as individuals and as a community benefit those in need,” said Eileen Diskin, Director of Alumni and Community Relations at the Rudolf Steiner School. “It also attunes the heart and will to doing good work, putting into deed our deeply held values of kindness, compassion, and helping our fellow human beings.”

The earthquake that hit Haiti on Tuesday, January 12th was the worst earthquake in 200 years - 7.0 in magnitude - and struck less than ten miles from Haiti’s capitol city of Port-au-Prince. Structures of all kinds were damaged or collapsed, from shantytown homes to national landmarks. Rescue teams from all over the world have descended on this small Caribbean nation to help.
All contributions received by the Waldorf School of Garden City will be donated to Yele Haiti - a grassroots movement that builds global awareness for Haiti. Yele Haiti has pulled together a group of like minded organizations and first responders in order to help coordinate the delivery of emergency services and materials. Each of the organizations has agreed to share resources, collaborate when it makes sense, and avoid duplication. To learn more about Yele Haiti go to www.yele.org.

Families and community members are encouraged to be on the lookout for these water jugs throughout the School and deposit any change into them. In addition to this effort, students throughout the School are organizing additional fundraisers to benefit the victims of this tragedy.
