Thomas F. Richmond
Thomas F. Richmond, a 43-year resident of Garden City died on January 29, 2010. Born in Brooklyn, he was a graduate of Fort Hamilton High School and Hofstra University. A veteran of the Korean War, he was a vice president of the Seaman’s Bank for Savings and human resources director of the Africa-American Institute, a non-governmental agency. A lifelong movie buff, he found joy as assistant producer of the weekly “Marvelous Monday Movie Matinee” series at the Garden City Public Library. He is survived by his loving wife, Sally Tate Richmond, and his devoted daughters, Elizabeth Del Castillo (Robert) of Brooklyn and Sarah Tate Richmond of New Jersey. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s Church, Garden City, Internment was at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
Catherine (Kay) Thompson
On January 22, 2010, Catherine (Kay) Thompson, a long time resident of Garden City, passed away. She was predeceased by her husband Charles and her son Kevin. She is survived by her six children; Chas, Cathy Hicks, Chris, Matthew, Kerry Koslo and Maura. Kay was a grandmother of thirteen and great-grandmother of one.
Kay was a very special person who touched so many people in her life. She taught religious education, was a Eucharist Minister and helped with the Human Services program for Saint Joseph’s Church. Kay donated years of service to the Garden City Estates Property Owners Association, as well as to the Garden City P.T.A. She was a fixture for over 30 years at the Stratford Avenue School polling place during all elections. Kay was a Special Education teacher’s aide in the Garden City High School for more than 25 years. She worked with so many children over the years, offering them her guidance, patience and understanding as she prepared them to go forth in life.
Kay was a woman who taught her children strong family values and how to give back to the world. She always had time for everyone and never hesitated to put others before herself. Kay will truly be missed by the many people whose lives she touched.
The Thompson family, in conjunction with the Garden City School District, is proud to establish a scholarship for a special education student in honor of Kay Thompson. Donations to the scholarship should be made out to the Garden City Public Schools (please note the Kay Thompson Scholarship in the memo).
