A Word From The Publisher

2010-02-05 / Letters

In this week’s issue, we feature letters written by the families of Garden City veterans who have been killed while serving their country. The letters were given to us by Garden City resident and Vietnam veteran Cyril Smith who has been advocating the improvement of the war memorial on Seventh Street. Smith has asked the Board of Trustees to consider consolidating the various memorials to one location, and including a marker for the names of those lost in the most recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is the right time of year to bring this idea up, as the budget for the next fiscal year is currently being created. From what we’ve heard from Mr. Smith, it sounds like his requests are not unreasonable, and could probably be accomplished by village employees, which would save some money.

We know this is again another tough budget year, but we hope the Board gives this proposal a thumbs up. It’s not a budget buster, and it will mean a lot to many people.
