Garden City Family Re-Opens The Swiss Tavern
Ellen Engelke, Eileen Engelke: Owners; Kate Murray, Town Supervisor; Ray Camacho, Executive Chef; Ilse Engelke, Previous Owner, Bob and Norman Engelke, Owners.
After 20 years the Engelke family of Garden City reclaims their parents’ restaurant and re-opens a newly renovated Swiss Tavern, a local landmark on Ocean Avenue in Lynbrook, existing there for over 70 years. Bob Engelke’s parents, Joe and Ilse Engelke of Franklin Square purchased the Swiss Tavern in 1966, and operated it for 20 years, until they sold the business. The Engelke brothers have now revitalized it and have recently celebrated their Grand Opening. Many local dignitaries attended the ribbon cutting ceremony, including Kate Murray. The Swiss Tavern is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. It is the Engelke’s hope that the new Swiss Tavern brings the same hometown atmosphere as was there years ago.
