The fourth part of the DVD lecture series From Monet to Van Gogh: A History of Impressionism will be presented at the library on Friday, February 12th at 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

Professor Richard Brettell of The University of Texas at Dallas will discuss how the availability of the railroad made the countryside near Paris accessible to Monet, Renoir and Pissaro. This setting became the Impressionist landscape of the 1860’s and 1870’s.

In 1870, the Franco-Prussian War and the occupation of Paris by the Prussian forces had a profound effect on Manet and Degas who then created representations of the horrors of war.

Within two years of the war’s end. the artists had arranged an exhibition of their works. Twenty-four of these works will be discussed in detail.

The program is open to the public and is a joint venture of both AAUW and The Friends of the Library.
