Garden City High School Girls Varsity Track
Jenna DeAngelo runs a strong leg of the 4x800.
Coming down the homestretch of the season, the Trojan runners are looking strong. Coaches Fregosi, Skrivanek and Lucas have been working the girls hard all season to get them to this point and they are starting to roll. The girls ran last Friday night at St. Anthony’s and then again on Saturday in the New Balance Games at the Armory. And again they had a week of some strong performances and several personal and season bests. The meet at St. Anthony’s marked the return to the track for Emily Menges and she ran nice and easy to second place finishes in both the 300m and 1000m. Michelle Rotondo claimed first place in the 55m hurdles and high jump, Tara DeAngelo finished in first place in the 1000m race with a personal best, Katie O’Neill and Sarah Rubino finished second and third in the 1500m both with personal bests and Taryn Schmelzinger continued to improve in the 55m hurdles with a fifth place finish and she also took second place in the high jump with a personal best effort. Also jumping to a personal best was Paulette Mochasi.

At the New Balance Games the Trojans ran their relay teams and they came home with some good performances, but also knowing that they can be stronger. They bettered their season best marks in the sprint medley relay and 4x800 with times of 4:18.52 and 9:27.10, respectively. The sprint medley team of Catherine Cafaro, Taryn Schmelzinger, Taylor Hennig and Michelle Rotondo finished sixth; while the foursome of Taylor, Michelle, Emma Gallagher and Jenna DeAngelo finished eight.
Also running in a 4x400, the group of Alexis Yeboah-Kodie, Catherine Cafaro, Taryn Schmelzinger and Katie O’Neill were less than a second off of their Millrose qualifying time with a 4:02.81.

The 4x400 and 4x800 relays will both be back on the track on Friday night for the 103rd running of the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden. Then they have a return to St. Anthony’s for the Conference Championships on Sunday. Wish the girls the best of luck and continued success as they come across the finish line of the season.
