THE JUNIOR LEAGUE of Long Island (JLLI), a nonprofit organization of women volunteers, is asking Long Islanders to donate business-appropriate apparel and accessories for its THIRD ANNUAL FIRST STEP Program, which provides professional attire to local women transitioning into the workforce. Donations of new and gently-used suits, dresses, shoes, briefcases and appropriate accessories will be accepted at the JJLI headquarters in Roslyn Village through March 15, 2010.Now in its third year, First Step helps Long Island women in transitional homes re-enter the work force by taking the “first step” in providing free professional clothing for interviews and beyond.

Participants are referred from local social service agencies, shelters, and food pantries to attend the event. Junior League members personally assist attendees with selecting appropriate clothing for their career. Lunch, manicures and child care will be provided to all participants for the day at no cost. “By selecting business outfits for interviews and the first days on a new job, these women are taking the first step toward financial independence. POLICE REPORT: MISCHIEF AND MAYHEM:

BETWEEN JANUARY 25 and 26, someone smashed a rear window on a Lincoln SUV parked in a Kildare Rd. driveway... Overnight, between January 21 and 22, thieves broke into unlocked cars at Transverse Rd., Keenan Place, ASh Street, St. James St. North, Magnolia, Arthur, and Prescott Streets, with nothing reported missing. Although, during the same period of time, someone damaged the handle to a door on a Mercury, and 2 cars were found open with their lights on, with some change taken at Spruce Street. A $300 Ipod Nano and charger were taken from a car parked at Keenan Place... ON JANUARY 22, 2 postal trucks parked at the post office, were found with front mirrors damaged. $40 each... ON JANUARY 24, 4 a.m., a 20-year-old Michigan female was arrested for alleged DWI (.13%), aggravated unlicensed operation (for 2 suspensions) for allegedly passing a red light, allegedly speeding, and the alleged failure to maintain a lane, at Old Country Rd... A CONTRACTOR remodeling a house came upon a Dartmouth Street house that had been broken into on January 21. A basement window had been unlatched and a back door was open. A 46” TV valued at $1400 was taken... ON JANUARY 19, 5:45 p.m., a man described as 6’6” tall allegedly entered T Mobile, Old Country Rd., and stole 2 Blackberrys before exiting the store... ON JANUARY 27, 3:15 a.m., PO Wehr and PO Oswald observed 2 suspicious persons walking at Clinton Road/Poplar Street, and after an investigation revealed a bench warrant from Suffolk County, a 32-year-old female was arrested on that charge and transferred to Suffolk for processing...

FIRE RESPONSES:

FD EXTINGUISHED a car fire at Stewart Ave./NHP Rd. on January 19... EVEN THOUGH a 2-year-old had locked out a Wellington Road resident on January 21, a neighbor was able to open the door with a key prior to FD arrival... A CHIMNEY situation resulted from a closed flue when a fire burned in a fireplace at a Meadbrook Rd. house on January 22... ON JANUARY 25, wires came down in the area of Fairmount Blvd. as well as on Third Street. There was also a hanging traffic signal at the intersection of Old Country Rd. and Washington Avenue...
