News From The Children’s Room Caldecott and Newbery
Medal Winners Announced
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) has announced the 2010 winners of the Caldecott and Newbery Medal. The 2010 Caldecott Medal was awarded to The Lion & The Mouse, illustrated and written by Jerry Pinkney. The 2010 Newbery medal was awarded to When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. Congratulations to both winners! Come in and check out these books as well as all the winners from previous years.
Make a Teddy Bear Tissue Box
Shirley Ruby will present this fun program for children ages 21/2-5, along with a caregiver. The program will be held Wednesday, February 17 at either 9:30AM or 11:00AM. This program is for Garden City residents only. Registration is required and begins Saturday, February 6 at 9:00AM on Eventkeeper. Children must bring their own boutique box of tissues to the program.
Clay Workshop
Join us for a great Clay Workshop with Rona Madri on Thursday, February 18. Children presently in Grades K-2 will meet at 1:00PM and children presently in Grades 3-5 will meet at 3:00PM. Registration is required and begins Saturday, February 6 at 9:00AM on Eventkeeper. This program is for Garden City residents only.
Chapter Chat
Chapter Chat is our introductory book discussion for second graders. Current Second Graders can sign up in the Children’s Room. Registration began on Monday, January 11. Sign up is for both meetings. On Wednesday, February 3, 4:00-4:45PM, Polar Bears Past Bedtime (Magic Treehouse Series) by Mary Pope Osborne will be discussed.On Wednesday, March 3, 4:00-4:45PM, Roscoe Riley Rules: Never Walk in Shoes that Talk by Katherine Applegate will be the subject of the meeting.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Party
The Book Ends is a new program for children presently enrolled in Grades 3-5. We’ll play games, make crafts and do other activities inspired by kids’ favorites, and we’ll talk about great reads. Tell us about one of your favorite books (past or present) and get a prize The first program is our Diary of a Wimpy Kid Party on Saturday, February 6 at 3:00-3:45pm. Registration began Monday, January 11 in the Children’s Room.
