Winthrop Seeks Volunteers For Study

2010-01-22 / Community

Winthrop-University Hospital’s Clinical Trials Center and Jonathan S. Ilowite, MD, Associate Chairman of Clinical Trials at Winthrop’s Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, are seeking volunteers who have been diagnosed with bronchiectasis for a clinical research study of an investigational product.

Bronchiectasis is a condition in which damage to the airways causes them to widen and become flabby and scarred. When damaged, the airways slowly lose their ability to clear out mucus, which creates an environment in which bacteria can grow. This leads to repeated, serious lung infections.

Winthrop’s study will test the safety and efficacy of the investigational inhaled product over a period of 12 months. To be eligible for the study, participants must be 18 to 80 years of age, have a diagnosis of bronchiectasis and a history of at least two pulmonary episodes, each needing antibiotic treatment, in the last 12 months and a total of at least 4 in the last 2 years prior to study entry. Eligible participants will receive study-related medical exams, research medication and laboratory tests at no cost to them while participating in the research study. Compensation will also be provided for time and travel.

To find out if you qualify or for further information, please call the Winthrop-University Hospital Clinical Trials Center at (516) 663-9582 or e-mail clinicaltrials@winthrop.org.
