Socially Speaking

Things have calmed down and the temperatures have gone up to the 40’s and it feels like a heat wave. It’s a time for contemplation and I have been getting questions. Many just want to know when Daylight Savings Time comes back (March 14 th ) and when they can expect spring (March 20 th ). However, the biggest question is what happened to the Community Calendar that is put out in the fall by the Chamber of Commerce? It is the program planner and I ask - did I miss it? No is the correct answer but you can probably call the Chamber Office to check a date for this spring or summer if you don’t want a conflict. The calendar is supposed to come out in the early fall (You can check dates when you attend the President’s Coffee in June) but it has not come out so far so do give it a call. I’m sure they can help you.

The Garden City Community Theater will be holding tryouts for its April 23 - 24 th show to be held in Gardener Hall in the G.C. Community Church on Thursday, Jan. 28 th at 7:30. If you are just interested in lending a helping hand with sets, costumes, lighting etc, you can show up and volunteer for that. It’s always fun to take part in something, so if you have never tried it before this is your chance to do something new in 2010.

The New Year is a time to count our blessings and when Ed Palkot counted his he had a sofa full. From the looks of it, Ed has six great grandsons and one great granddaughter. I’ll bet she gets her share of the action and the love. Congrats to you Ed and to your lovely family.

The Monday Movies at the Garden City Library has a full house and the number of gentlemen attending has risen. Some come with their wives and quite a few come alone. That indicates how popular it is and at the last show Jean and Walter Tomitz, Paula Howe, Lee Amrheim, and Jane MacDougall were all in attendance. The regulars were happy to hear that Tom Richmond’s family is looking for a rehab center for him and all are hoping that they will be seeing him before too long. Sal Cantania will keep everyone informed but keep up with the cards and prayers for Tom.

Alberta Maggio, who is in charge of the Reading Group for the G.C. Branch of AAUW, began the new year with a discussion of “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson. Amy Small was the hostess and Joan Afflerbach was her co-hostess this past week.

The G.C. Nursery School in conjunction with Target will present “Peter Pan and Wendy” on Sunday, January 31 st at Hofstra’s Monroe Theater. This is age appropriate for Pre-K to 5 th Grade. Call Stacey Young at 516-326-3282 for more information. Sounds good to me.

Happy birthday wishes go to Ray Hartman, who will be celebrating his special day on January 25 th . You have it all to yourself Ray so do have a wonderful day and a year filled with much happiness and good health with many more to come.

Happy wedding anniversary wishes go to Beatrice and James Mercadante who will be celebrating on January 30 th . All the best to you both and good wishes for many more years of married bliss.

Books and reading are getting to be very big lately and it is a good trend. One can learn from just about any book and if, you are a member of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead, you are in for a big treat. The Drama-Literature Department will present its annual Book Review by its members. They get to pick the books (many do at least two books) and you get a list of those books so when you hear a review that you like you can check it off and get it at the Library. The program will be held on Wednesday, January 27 th . If you are not a member, you might attend and fill out an application to join. They have a wide variety of programs for all tastes. Prem Chauhan is the Chairlady of the Drama Literature Department.

Now for your thought for the week. Somebody said “Good mothers never raise their voices.” That somebody never came out of the back door in time to see her child hit a golf ball through the neighbor’s kitchen window. See you next week.
