Jupiter String Quartet And A World Premiere At Adelphi
The Jupiter String Quartet
Adelphi University welcomes back the Jupiter String Quartet for its second prestige concert this season as Adelphi’s Ensemble-in-Residence. The group, hailed as “one of the strongest young string quartets in the country* by the New York Sun, will perform on Friday, February 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the 500-seat acoustically state-of-the-art concert hall at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AU PAC), 1 South Avenue,
Garden City.
Don’t miss the World Premiere of Ramshackle Songs by the rising American composer Dan Visconti. Commissioned for the Jupiter String Quartet by the Fromm Foundation, Ramshackle Songs was inspired by the composer*s fascination with Tin Pan Alley, that unique collection of music publishers and song-pluggers who made West 28th Street the heart of American popular song. This cycle of “songs without words” reflects the Alley’s spirit of informality, wit, and recreational music-making.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer called Visconti’s music “both mature and youthful, bristling with exhilarating musical ideas and a powerfully crafted lyricism.” The program opens with the exuberance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 18, No. 6, and concludes with Dvo’ák’s “American” String Quartet in F Major, Op. 96.
The Jupiter String Quartet is comprised of violinists Nelson Lee and MegFreivogel, violist Liz Freivogel, and cellist Daniel McDonough. The quartet has received a number of honors, including first prize in the Banff International String Quartet Competition, grand prize in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award, and membership in the Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Two, among many other notable distinctions. They have toured the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, and South America, and have graced the stages of Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, and the Library of Congress, as well as numerous other venues at home and abroad. Their most recent accomplishment was receiving an Avery Fisher
Career Grant.
Reserved tickets for the event will be available for $20 (regular) and $15 (senior citizens). To learn more about the AU PAC and view the season schedule, please visit aupac.adelphi.edu or call the AU PAC Box Office at (516) 877-4000.
