EHS Honors Darwin’s Birthday

On Sunday, February 7, from 11 am to 2 pm, the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City is celebrating science in conjunction with Darwin’s birthday.

The main presentation is “Seashore Safari.” Tracy Marcus from the Cornell Cooperative Extension presents a hands-on introduction to local marine life-sea stars, shellfish, hermit crabs, snails and... the infamous horseshoe crab. Ms. Marcus has demonstrated this popular program for adults and children. Ms. Marcus has a master’s degree in Earth Science Education and is a New York State Certified Earth Science and Biology Secondary teacher. She had worked for 13 years in a several school districts and has been with the New York State Parks, Western Suffolk Boces and Cornell Cooperative Extension for the past nine years.

Children will create science projects reflecting the environmental impact of pollution. Arts and crafts will be available all day, including a graffiti wall. Other children’s activities will include a “survival of the fittest” game and dissecting owl pellets. Lunch will be sold.

The event will take place at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island, located at 38 Old Country Road, Garden City, NY (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the water tower).
