Steven Fishbane, MD In the latest step in his illustrious career at Winthrop-University Hospital, Steven Fishbane, MD, has been named Chief Medical Officer for the 591-bed major regional healthcare provider located in Mineola, NY. He will serve in this capacity concurrent with his role as Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Medical Director of Winthrop’s Dialysis Network - the largest Hospital-based dialysis system on Long Island with three inpatient units (at Winthrop, St. Francis Hospital and New Island Hospital) and four outpatient dialysis centers.

Dr. Fishbane began his career at Winthrop in 1993 after graduating from medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completing an internship in medicine at Beth Israel Hospital, a residency in internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, and a fellowship in nephrology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

At Winthrop for more than 15 years, Dr. Fishbane has served in a variety of roles in clinical, research and educational capacities. He is Director of Renal Research at the hospital and is involved in many hospital and regional committees, many of which are focused on quality management and improvement and medical information systems. His interest in and contributions to quality management in healthcare were recognized in 2002 by the healthcare quality assurance organization IPRO, which named him winner of the Physician Leadership in Quality Improvement Award.

In addition, Dr. Fishbane has been named to New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors” list many times and was named Outstanding Teaching Attending Physician by Winthrop in 1994.

Dr. Fishbane is active with regional and national professional organizations, serving as a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the National Kidney Foundation, on the Editorial Board of the American Society of Nephrology, the Practice Guidelines Committee of the International Kidney Disease Improvement Council and the Medical Review Board for New York State. He is also the Regional Medical Director for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) Care Management for High Cost Beneficiaries Demonstration (2005-2011).

A practicing nephrologist, Dr. Fishbane is Board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. In the field of renal research, Dr. Fishbane has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals.

In his role as Chief Medical Officer at Winthrop, Dr. Fishbane assumes the ultimate role of medical staff leadership, with the goal of ensuring effective and efficient delivery of quality medical care. The Chief Medical Officer also acts as the primary liaison between hospital administration and the medical staff; works with clinical department chairs on the exploration, development and implementation of clinical improvements; serves as an integral member of the hospitals senior leadership team in the assessment and addressing of strategic priorities; works collaboratively with Information Technology and the Chief Medical Information Officer to support development of information systems that promote efficient, highly reliable and safe patient care; helps to foster an environment that promotes excellence in patient care, education and research; and is accountable for overall medical quality management at the hospital including patient safety, patient satisfaction, medical care efficiency, medical staff performance and publicly reported clinical measures.

Dr. Fishbane’s appointment follows the announcement by outgoing Chief Medical Officer Joseph Greensher, MD, that he planned to step down from the position effective January 1. Dr. Greensher, a highly respected and much beloved pediatrician, will continue in his role as Vice Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Winthrop.
