GC East Resident Electors’ Meeting, General Meeting
The elected members of the Garden City East Nominating committee, otherwise known as the 10-Member Nominating committee, have unanimously nominated Nicholas Episcopia, current Trustee from the East, to the Village’s Board of Trustees for a new two-year term.
Mr. Episcopia’s name will be put in nomination at the Garden City East Resident Electors’ meeting, to be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, in the Stewart School auditorium, beginning promptly at 7:30 pm. A qualified resident elector is any resident of Garden City residing East of the center of Franklin Avenue then eligible to register to vote in any applicable school or Village election.
Should any resident elector wish to place in nomination any other candidate, that resident elector need only present a petition bearing the proposed candidate’s name and signed by 15 resident electors (including addresses) of the East at the January 19 meeting. Should that happen, a run-off election will be held in February and the winner of that election will become the Community Agreement’s candidate in the Village election, to be held in March.
If no additional nominations by petition are received at the January 19 Resident Electors’ meeting, nominations will be closed and the corporate secretary of the EPOA shall cast one vote on behalf of the Resident Electors of the East for the candidate nominated.
Mr. Episcopia was first elected a Trustee from the East in 2005. He expressed his interest in continuing to serve the Village and the Committee agreed that he has done an outstanding job representing not only the interests of the East but of the entire Village.
He is the current Fire Commissioner and chairs the Trustee’s Public Information Committee. He has previously served as Building Commissioner, Public Works Commissioner, Liaison to the Business Community and the Library Board, as well as a member of the Traffic Commission. Nick was an EPOA officer and director from 1998 to 2005, holding the positions of vice president and president.
Nick recently represented the Village at a statewide meeting in Albany, sponsored by the New York State Conference of Mayors, on state legislation that affects villages.
He was especially involved with planning for the environmental and zoning hearings held by the Town of Hempstead Board on the Lighthouse proposal. He spoke against the Lighthouse project at the zoning hearings and contacted the Mayors of Hempstead, Mineola and Westbury, successfully convincing them to formally present their opposition to this project to the Hempstead Town Board.
Nick is a former President of the Garden City Jaycees and a previous Director of the GCHS Men’s Association. He and his wife Dorothy have been residents of the East for 36 years. Their son and daughter attended GC public schools and their daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren reside in the East.
Robert Stark is chairperson of the 10-Member Nominating Committee. Other members are May Conti, Sue Davis, John Delany, Jaime Gans, Hal Hecken, Joe Moody, Neil O’Malley, Barbara Ruggiero and Mary Weille. They were elected by resident electors at the June, 2009, annual Public EPOA Joint Meeting from a slate of 22 candidates.
Immediately following the Resident Electors’ meeting, the Eastern Property Owners’ Association (EPOA) will conduct its general meeting with presentations from Village officials. Residents of the East are urged to attend and participate.
