Driscoll Sparks Pomfret To First Win

The Pomfret Boys basketball team traveled to New York on December 12 for a 3-plus hour jaunt to face the Mustangs of Millbrook. The first half was a good old-fashioned boxing match with both teams trading blows.

Neither team led by more than 4 until about 3 minutes left when Pomfret played selflessly and extended their lead to 10 at the half. Hot shooting and tough rebounding by Garden City’s Leo Driscoll (who had his best game in a Pomfret uniform) and solid team free-throw shooting down the stretch also aided in our pulling away.

The second half saw Pomfret play even better as they forced turnovers, rebounded well, and ran the break perfectly. Driscoll, Jack Nicholson, and JJ Ahmed came off the bench and provided their teammates with a spark that saw Pomfret extend its lead to 18. Millbrook however made a run and cut the lead to 7, but Danny Gagnon hit a clutch three-point basket that was the nail in the coffin.

This was Pomfret’s first win of the season (84-74) and it was the result of good team play and strong games from Driscoll, Aziz Dieng and a phenomenal game from Cameron Bell who finished with 29 points and 16 rebounds. The team heads to Boston this weekend where they will compete in the Rivers’ Tournament.
