In Memoriam

Eileen Reinhardt

Eileen Reinhardt Eileen Mary Sharkey Reinhardt

Eileen Reinhardt died peacefully on December 4 near Boston, Massachusetts following complications from a stroke on December 4, 2009. As her friends and family mourn, they also remember the vibrant, loving, compassionate, multi-talented, 87-year-old woman and mother of six who so enriched their lives.

Eileen came into this world during the Roaring Twenties in the same year women received the right to vote. A New Yorker by birth, Eileen Sharkey spent her school-age years in Roselle, New Jersey and then went on to work for the Guaranty Trust Corporation in Manhattan. During World War II she was a Red Cross nurse’s aide volunteer until her marriage in 1944 to Charles John Reinhardt, a Cadet-Midshipman about to graduate from the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. Because those were the war years, their honeymoon was compressed into a single night at the famed Waldorf Astoria. Shortly thereafter, the newly commissioned Ensign Reinhardt and his young bride received orders to a training command in St. Petersburg, Florida where they spent the duration of the war.

Eileen and Charles later lived in Hollis, Queens. That was followed by a move in 1956 to Huntington Road in Garden City where they raised their family of six children. Following the death of her husband in 1991, Eileen elected to remain in the family home until late 2006 when she moved to Massachusetts so that she could be closer to several of her children and grandchildren.

Eileen maintained deep friendships throughout her life and is described by those dear friends as being lovely, patient and caring. Her most important role was that of being a mother. She also loved books, difficult crossword puzzles, her challenging career in residential real estate, and time spent at her beloved Jones Beach. Eileen walked a gentle path facing everything from children’s wounded knees to life-changing events such as the deaths of her daughter, Sherry, and her husband, with a rare deliberateness and resolve. Her faith played a large role in her acceptance of life’s many tribulations.

Eileen’s last years were spent at Traditions, a lovely assisted living residence in Wayland, Massachusetts. She was laid to rest on December 8 at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury next to her beloved husband. She is survived by five children: Susan Reinhardt of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts; Charles Reinhardt of Bedford, Massachusetts; Elizabeth Reinhardt of Aldie, Virginia; Mark Reinhardt of Plantation, Florida; Patricia Reinhardt of Wayland, Massachusetts; and eleven grandchildren.
