A Word From The Publisher

We were glad to hear that the Village and School district have come to a resolution over the issue of placing a crossing guard at Stratford and Nassau Boulevard. The road is clearly a dangerous one, and it would have been a horrible tragedy if a child had been injured or killed while the Boards debated what should be done.

For those who enjoy watching local politics, frankly it was surprising that this issue wasn’t handled more expediently. In the past, the two boards worked well together on issues of mutual concern. Indeed, one of Garden City’s great strengths is that the boundaries of the village and school district are almost coterminous - nearly all homeowners pay taxes to both entities. Because of that, when the boards can find ways to work together, the residents come out winners. For example, if the boards can consolidate operations on, say, snow plowing for parking lots, the residents may pay less overall tax.

The handling of the crossing guard issue makes us wonder if the boards are working together as fully as possible.

It’s almost time for the annual meetings of the POAs. Maybe this could be a topic for discussion, since the POAs select the trustees for both boards?
