Statement By Village
It has been recommended to the Village Traffic Commission that it review the issue of assigning a crossing guard to the intersection of Nassau Boulevard and Stratford Avenue during the morning and afternoon hours to protect students who are crossing to and from the Stratford Avenue School and to make a recommendation to the Village Board of Trustees at its meeting of December 17, 2009.
The designation of a Child Safety Zone rests with the Board of Education. This determination is based upon the careful review of conditions at an intersection and the assignment of points to a DOT analysis sheet. The School District and the Garden City Police Department both independently completed the analysis and differed on the point allocation. In an effort to obtain an independent review of the respective determinations, the Village obtained the assistance of the New York State Department of Transportation. The DOT advised that existence of the pedestrian push button at the traffic signal, which extends the amount of time for a pedestrian to cross the four-lane roadway, makes the crossing ineligible to be designated as a Child Safety Zone.Upon receipt of the Traffic Commission’s recommendation, the Board of Trustees will make a determination as to the assignment of a crossing guard to the intersection. The Village will seek the School District’s assistance in making notification to area residents and will continue to press Nassau County for additional improvements to signage and the walk/don’t walk signal.
