The basketball season started off on a high note for Garden City’s girls team last Friday night and it wasn’t just because of a victory over Syosset. Senior Diana Leondis began the season with 996 career points. It was only a matter of minutes into this non league game before Leondis would become the 4th GC girl to reach 1000 points. Stephanie Leondis (Diana’s cousin), Jean Bartholomew and Bethany LeSueur all reached 1000 points (LeSueur would go on to a Long Island record 3,167 points). As her 1000th point made it through the net the crowd cheered and the game came to a temporary halt as Diana was honored by friends and family.
Play resumed and the Trojans went on to win 69-32. Leondis led all scorers with 23 points and nine assists. Also scoring for the Trojans: Barbara Sullivan (18 points), Kim Ryan (9 points), Katie Trimmer (7 points, 13 rebounds), Elizabeth Stutzmann (4 points), Amalia DeBrosse (4 points), Jess Stein (2 points), and Kerry Hosford (2 points).
Friends were on hand to cheer on Diana Leondis as she went for her 1000th career point. See this photo at www.Newsphoto.com
