Locust Students Learn History Of Fire Fighting

The history of fire-fighting came alive for the students at Locust School during a recent visit by Philip Huntington, husband of kindergarten teacher Rose Huntington, and his restored 1923 Brockway Torpedo. Mr. Huntington brought the 17’ “roller pumper” by trailer to the school for each kindergarten class to have an outdoor classroom, hands-on experience as they learned about how firemen fought fires in the early 20th-century. Originally part of the Huntington Manor volunteer fire company equipment, Mr. Huntington purchased the pumper in good condition with much of the restoration work completed. Philip has worked to uphold the vehicle’s authenticity by replacing portions which were not part of the original equipment with parts from 2 other Brockway fire trucks he owns.

Locust kindergartners were able to climb aboard the pumper and try their hand at the fire bell and hand-crank siren. Mr. Huntington also shared antique fire-fighting gear with the children including a helmet, jacket, and tools during his visit.

Thank you to Mr. Huntington for sharing this fascinating piece of fire-fighting history with the kindergarten classes at Locust School!
