Community Club Hears Secretary’s “Confessions”
Community Club of Garden City L-R: Sal Catania, Prem Chauhan, Adele Lynch.
Prem Chauhan, Chairperson of the Drama/Literature Department of The Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead, did not have to search very far for a guest speaker on Wednesday, November 18th at 1:30 p.m. On that day, Adele Lynch, an 8 year member of the organization held the audience enthralled for 90 minutes as she related her work experiences as a production assistant on many television and Broadway productions.
Responding to questions by interviewer Sal Catania, Ms. Lynch related the beginning of her career in Detroit, where her ambition had always been to become another Lois Lane or Brenda Starr. She wisely heeded the advice of her mother to learn stenography and typing. She was hired as a typist in the Arts and Entertainment section of The Detroit News. One day, her editor called her in desperation asking her to cover an assignment for a reporter who became ill.
The assignment was to interview Elvis Presley! Buoyed by this experience, she mustered her courage and moved to New York where she took up residence at the famed Barbizon Hotel for Women (scene of the celebrated play Stage Door). She responded to an ad for a secretary for Channel 13 in New Jersey. This job led to other contracts and eventually she found herself working for David Merrick, Garson Kamin, Dick Clark and Mitch Miller. Along the way, she interacted with Phil Silvers, Steve Law-rence, Edie Gorme, Rudy Valley and Shirley Temple.
She retired when she was married and moved to Garden City to raise her family. she saw an ad in the paper for a Production Co-Ordinator in the Communications Department at Adelphi University. She worked for 10 months per year from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. so she was able to combine her work career with raising her family.
A lively question and answer period followed her discussion.
Willa Ward was in charge of arrangements for the day. Decorations were provided by Anne Daley and Ruth LaBosco. Florence Frieda and Jennie Catania greeted guests at the door.
Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Community Club may phone the office at 746-0488 between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
