As part of the Stratford Avenue School’s “Go Green Initiative Program,” Madelyn Fisher-Fogel’s second grade class has initiated two recycling programs for the 2009-2010 school year. “Our first program will be collecting empty Capri Sun Juice Packets,” commented Mrs. Fisher-Fogel. “Each classroom has been equipped with a green bin to gather the empty juice packets. Once the bin is filled, students will deliver it to our classroom. The “Fisher-Fogels” will count the packets, clean and return the bins immediately to the students.” Mrs. Fisher-Fogel opens and cleans each juice packet with the goal of shipping them to the TerraCycle Company located in Trenton, New Jersey. TerraCycle recycles the juice packets into a variety of school items such as pencil cases, lunch boxes, tote bags, backpacks, etc. For more information on the TerraCycle Company, please go to www.terracycle.net
The second program Mrs. Fisher-Fogel’s class is coordinating is the collection of old athletic shoes for Nike’s “Reuse-A-Shoe” program. A large box has been placed in Stratford’s lobby for shoe collection. All types of sneakers can be utilized for recycling. The shoes will be delivered to the Nike Store located in the Tanger Outlet in Riverhead, New York. “Each shoe will be sliced into three separate layers,” continued Mrs. Fisher-Fogel, “which are then recycled and converted into various items, for example, track and playground surfaces, cushioning pads for indoor sport courts, etc.” For more information on the Nike’s “Reuse-A-Shoe” program, please go to www.nikereuseashoe.com
Congratulations and thank you to Stratford’s “Fisher-Fogels” for their conscientious recycling efforts!
