Garden City Middle Schoolers Conduct Interviews

Middle school seventh graders were decked out in shirts and ties or dresses and fancy shoes for the annual Home and Careers job interviews. Mrs. Bozzi-Beovich’s students received valuable hands-on learning experience from this activity.

About thirty parents and staff members descended on room 249 to act as prospective employers. Each student was interviewed for the entry-level job of his or her choice, ranging from “Mother’s Helper,” to waiter or bus person, to supermarket or department store cashier, to camp counselor, to name a few.

This was the culmination of the career unit in which students discovered their aptitudes and abilities, applied their multiple intelligences and right- and left-brain strengths. They learned about various careers, and researched careers of interest. Students read classified ads, filled out job applications, and practiced interviewing for jobs. When the big day came, the students met with the adult volunteers one by one for the interviews.

Adult interviewers were all impressed with the students’ preparation, poise, and presentation. Ninety-nine percent of the students were “hired!”, such as with the “interviewee” and “employer” pictured here. All prospective employers agreed that the student candidates were quite impressive!
