The 8th grade students from the Waldorf School of Garden City recently delivered a cornucopia of freshly harvested vegetables from the School’s garden to the Mary Brennan INN, a soup kitchen in Hempstead that is part of the Interfaith Nutrition Network.

Said Mrs. Jeannine Davis, the School’s gardening teacher, “We brought 15 heads of butter-crunch lettuce, 15 heads of red leaf lettuce, 15 heads of Romaine lettuce, and numerous baskets filled with leeks, Russian kale, collard greens, fennel, thyme and parsley - all grown in our garden by the students. Many thanks to Garden City resident and current Waldorf parent Linda Wallace for her help in making this trip possible. We plan to make more visits in the future!”

By creating and sustaining an organic garden that is wholly integrated into the School’s curriculum, culture, and food program, Waldorf students become involved in all aspects of gardening, preparing, serving, and eating food. Since the School’s beginnings in 1947, gardening has been an integral part of the curriculum. In addition to use of our 10-acre campus in Garden City, the Waldorf School operates Camp Glen Brook which consists of 240 acres of farmland and forests in southwestern New Hampshire. For the students, the entire gardening process awakens their senses and encourages an awareness and appreciation of the transformative values of nourishment, community, and stewardship of the land. This recent service-learning experience provided the students an opportunity to share their harvest and learn about the vital services provided by the Mary Brennan INN.
