A Word From The Publisher
The Garden City School District and the Garden City Traffic Commission have been arguing over how to best protect the twenty or so Stratford Avenue students who have to cross Nassau Boulevard on their way to and from school each day.
According to the school district, which has authority to create Child Safety Zones, the intersection at Nassau Boulevard and Stratford Avenue doesn’t qualify. The School Board wants the Village to post a crossing guard.
The Traffic Commission, on the other hand, thinks it does qualify and has countered that since there are seats available on school buses anyway, the school district should provide transportation for the children.
In the meantime, while the two boards argue, the children are not being treated right.
We propose that until a resolution is reached, each side concede a little. The School Board should ask for a third party’s opinion (such as the Automobile Club). At the same time, the Village should temporarily assign someone (an officer, a parking enforcement person or even ask the volunteer Special Police to help out) to help the children cross safely.
It seems very unfair to these children that they are being kept in limbo.
