The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) have named Georgetown University’s Joan Burggraf Riley (NHS’76, G’97), formerly of Garden City, as the 2009 District of Columbia Professor of the Year. Awardees will be honored at a luncheon this afternoon.

Riley, an assistant professor at Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies (NHS), received the recognition after being selected from a pool of faculty nominated by institutions throughout Washington. Honors went to one winner each from 38 states out of the more than 300 top professors nominated nationwide. Four other professors received national awards for their work.

“I am honored and humbled to receive this award, just as I am inspired by the intellectual curiosity and passion for learning of Georgetown students,” said Riley, who teaches in the human science and nursing departments.
