GC Rovers Back On Track

2009-11-20 / Sports

The GC Rovers got back on track the past 2 weekends with victories over the Syosset Supergiants and Albertson Storm. On a blustery November 7th the GC Rovers took to the St. Pauls Pitch to play a tough Syosset team which was carrying a three game winning streak. The Rovers coming off a pair of heartbreaking 1 goal losses, the previous two weeks, came out with vengeance in their eyes. A quick goal opened up the scoring for the Rovers which quickly added another goal, before conceding one to Syosset to end the half. The Rovers added another goal to make it 3-1, that is when the coaches deployed the “Barking Wall” in which all the Rovers played defense. The 3-1 win is just what the Doctor ordered (Dr. Murphy that is).

This past Sat Nov 14 the Rovers took to the road to play a tough Albertson team on a MUDDY field in the rain. The boys were up to the task at hand and slid and sloshed thru the mud for a 0-0 first half. Johnny Skahill went down late in the first half with a knee injury after he clank one off the post. Liam Muldoon came up big with some great play in the net. At halftime the boys got the speech about winning one for Johnny and they did not disappoint. With John Murphy minding the net with aggressiveness that the Storm had not seen before, the defense of Michael Handal, Justin Coppola, Will Honan and Owen Wieland kept feeding the midfielders and kept the Storm at bay. Luke Connolly, Matt Granville, Liam Muldoon, Andrew Desantis kept the putting the pressure on Albertson’s back 3. Andrew Desantis broke thru the muddy walls and hit a perfect RIGHTY shot in the lower net to put the Rovers up 1-0. It was then time again to deploy the Barking Wall and with the defense clearing the ball, the middies put even more pressure on the Storm’s D and as the game came to an end the boys and coaches were proud of their effort.

We expect full recoveries from Skahill and Wuchte for the last game of the fall season verse the Oceanside Knights on Sat. Nov 21st at St. Pauls. Great job lads and Coach Connolly and Wieland are proud of the effort you are putting in at practice and games. One more monster effort and we will finish better then .500 in our 1st season together which everyone can be proud of. Thanks again to the parents and coaches for their time and effort.
