Torrential rains and wind set the stage for a repeat of last year’s Class “B” Long Island Field Hockey Championship game between the undefeated Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats and last year’s winner, the Garden City Trojans. Garden City defender Katie Harrington put the Trojans on the board seven minutes into the first period when she took an Eleni Andromidas shot and put it in the goal giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead. Harrington scored again, off an assist from Kerry Hosford, at 15:37 putting GC up 2-0. Sophomore Catherine McTiernan deflected a Mariah Pewarski shot from outside the circle to give Garden City a three-goal lead. SWR fought back and with less than two minutes to go in the half, the Wildcats’ Kaitlyn Brosco scored to make it 3-1. Second half action saw no change in score and the Trojans went on to win 3-1. Kaitlyn Williams made three saves in goal for GC. This is the 13th Long Island title for Trojans’ coach Diane Chapman, since she took over the program in 1991. Garden City will face the winner of Lakeland (Sect. I)/Red Hook (Sect. IX) in the state regional semifinal game on Nov. 20 @ 9:30 a.m. at Vestal High School.
