Pomfret Defeats Portsmouth Abbey In Season Finale
      On a rainy Saturday afternoon in Portsmouth, R.I., the Pomfret School defeated a very talented Portsmouth Abbey football squad 7-0. Pomfret’s Connor Quinn scored on a 42 yard run capping an 80 yard drive. The key play on the scoring drive was Leo Driscoll’s 25 yard pass completion to Cam Geary on a 3rd down play with 18 yards to go for a 1st down.

TMA Garden City Family Football Classic
      The Men’s Association of Garden City and the Andy Foundation are presently accepting team applications and sponsorships for the 2009 Football Classic. The tournament will be held on Saturday, November 28th from 11 am - 4 pm at St. Paul’s field. Entry fee is $30 per adult and $15 per child and includes lunch and trophies.

Leo’s Melkonian Wins Summer Softball Championship
      Article: Leo’s Melkonian softball team won the 2009 summer championship of the Garden City Open Softball League. Leo’s Melkonian lost the first game of the best of three series to Leo’s Lady Lovers team rallying for two straight wins to win the championship. This was Leo’s Melkonian’ third championship in recent years.

Thunder 8s Shutout Farmingdale -Advance to Nassau County Championship
      On Sunday November 15th the Garden City Thunder O’Connor 8s played host to a NCYFL play-off game at Stewart Field. The opponent was the always tough and physical Farmingdale Hawks. Garden City had retained home field advantage due to their number one seed in the play-offs.

Broncos To Go To Championship
      Matthew Mohen, a first grader from Garden City, is playing for the West Hempstead Broncos, whose pee-wee 6-7 year old team has advanced to in the Nassau Suffolk Football League playoffs, by defeating Plainview. Next Sunday, the Broncos will play in the Pee Wee NFC Championship game.

      The GC Rovers got back on track the past 2 weekends with victories over the Syosset Supergiants and Albertson Storm. On a blustery November 7th the GC Rovers took to the St. Pauls Pitch to play a tough Syosset team which was carrying a three game winning streak.

Trojans Edge Carey 21-19 To Advance To County Final
      There were three minutes left in the Conference II football semifinals at Hofstra last Friday night and Garden City High’s defense faced its biggest play of the year. Carey, which already had become the first team to cross the Trojans’ goal line this season, had just scored its third touchdown to close to within two points at 21-19.

      Competing in the Nassau County “A” Classification, the 2009 Girls Varsity Volleyball team began a rebuilding season on a winning note. However, just three matches into its schedule, the team began to struggle due to a series of injuries and illnesses to key team members.

Boys Varsity Soccer Finishes Incredible Run
      It was an incredible run for Garden City High’s boys soccer team. After completing an undefeated regular season, the team was the number one seed going into the playoffs. Victories over Division, Lynbrook and Jericho led the Trojans to the Nassau County Championship game against the South Side Cyclones on Wednesday, November 11th at Adelphi.

      The Garden City Centennial Soccer Club will be entering a few girls’ teams in the Long island Rough Riders Session II Winter League for U8 players, players who are born on or after August 1st 2001. The session II Winter league starts on January 30th and ends at the end of March.

St. Anne’s CYO Basketball U-10
      On Saturday November 14th St Anne’s CYO U-10 played Corpus Christi (Mineola) for their first game of the 2009 fall season. While most of players were new to the team, they did not disappoint. St Anne’s built up 10 point lead by the 3rd period by baskets by James Drogalis, David Bianco, Brandon Brugnone and Sean Moran.
