Stratford Students Celebrate Red Ribbon Week

This year, the students at the Stratford Avenue School participated in their second annual Red Ribbon Week event. This important initiative was designed by the National Family Partnership (NFP), which reminds young people of all ages to “Say No to Drugs!”

Students were introduced to the concept of “Red Ribbon Week” during an assembly facilitated by social worker, Michele Degati. Students were reminded that schools throughout the United States choose to participate in this important event as a way to encourage them to remain “drug free.”

To commemorate Red Ribbon Week, students from all grades participated in the planting of red tulips as a pledge to remain drug free. Planting flowers is a symbol of hope and a great way to involve children, parents, and teachers in raising awareness about substance abuse. In addition, when the flowers bloom, they will serve as a tangible reminder for our students and the community to remain DRUG FREE!

On October 29, 2009, students and parent volunteers at the Stratford Avenue School planted over 800 tulips in celebration of this event. The program was a huge success and a great way to motivate students to remain drug and alcohol free. The success and enthusiasm of this event demonstrates the importance of educating young people at an early age about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

A special thank you to teacher/ parent volunteers: Mrs. Issing, Ms. Nicolini, Mrs. Trapani, Mrs. Krawiec, Mrs. Acinapuro, Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Stefanik, Mrs. McVickar, Mrs. Besendorfer, Mrs. Simmons, Mrs. Crowley, Mrs. Fetherston, Mrs. Molloy and all the parents who volunteered and assisted the children during this event.
