Library Holds Successful Summer Food Drive
The Garden City Public Library as part of the Annual Hauppauge Industrial Association’s Summer Food Drive contributed 150 lbs. of non-perishable food and other items to Long Island Cares, Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank. The Library had a collection bin in the lobby for canned and dry goods and other non-perishable baby products, laundry products, and paper products throughout the summer. Long Island Cares, Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank thanked the Library and its patrons for joining the organization’s mission to end hunger on Long Island.
According to Hunger in America, a comprehensive study of domestic hunger, an estimated 259,000 Long Island residents - including nearly 93,000 children and 39,000 senior - are hungry. Long Island Cares distributes more than five million pounds of food to nearly 600 member agencies. In addition, the organization seeks to heighten public awareness about hunger and provides skills training to foster self-sufficiency among the population that benefits from the services.
